SampleMusicFestival 2018

Are you ready for the fourth installment of SampleMusicFestival? As always you can expect invaluable lectures, workshops and showcases by far-sighted artists and we will continue our successful competition program regarding turntablism, finger drumming and beat making.

This year  we will move to another venue for the event on Saturday and Sunday. CASSIOPEIA is located directly in the RAW area  which is a cultural center made up of a theatre, flea market, skate park, circus for children and several clubs. This famous district of Kreuzberg / Friedrichshain is considered the most notorious clubbing mile of Berlin and become the home of SMF 2018.

Musical Interaction Room

One big focus of the event is the linking of sponsors and attendees in an intuitive way so that everyone who attends SMF 2018 can benefit. We strive to stray from the regular exhibition set up for purely commercial purposes, to do this we plan to install a "musical interaction room“.

The aim is to animate the attendees to use sponsor products in this in this musical context. All the equipment will pre-loaded with samples/sounds and be daisy chained with the PA in the room and so the users may conduct jam sessions in between the hourly product related showcases.

Clash of the Titans

A highlight is SMF 2018 is the "Clash of the Titans" on Saturday between 12 different scratch communities from all over the globe. All of them are known for high-level scratching and battles and this year we want to bring them together for an epic battle. Each country will hold their own local battle, the top 2 of the local battle will head to Berlin for the final. These battles take place every 2 weeks from April to July, and with the winners coming for the final at SMF, we have the unique opportunity of owning the conversation around the entire worldwide scratch scene for nearly the entire year of 2018.

Breaking New Ground

In 2018 we are trying to break new ground by including more traditional musicians. Hence we have teamed up with BIMM. This music institute is a group of eight independent colleges with over 6,000 students that specialize in providing Modern Music education.

Our aim is to attract more people from outside of the established  turntablism and finger drumming community to promote public awareness of sample-based music. We expect from this cooperation new input to create a growing network of music enthusiasts.

Finger Drumming Competition

After the big success of the first Finger Drumming Competition at SMF 2017 we ring the next round. Participants from all over the globe will compete against each others on Saturday, 02.09.2018. Depending on the numbers of participants we plan already a qualification on Friday at GENERATOR Hostel. So keep your eyes open and check our website regularly.

Beatmaking Competition

For the first time ever we gonna host a beat making competition as part of the event.  The rules are really simple: One given sample which will be provided directly before the battle starts is the fundament to make a beat.

There is no restriction regarding the gear you can use for this challenge. After 2 hours of beat creating we start the voting after a listening session of each contribution. What the judges will be looking for is originality, creativity, mixing skills and overall dopeness!

The Project “SampleSlam” was founded in March 2015 in Munich. Since then over 10 Slams across Germany, in Berlin, Leipzig, Munich and Heidelberg have been carried out. The philosophy of the project is to give young unknown music producers the chance of being heard and seen on a stage. The project is not based on making profit. Its main purpose is to act as a connector for creative individuals who seek to collaborate to come up with new ideas and to share their art.

The concept is simple. Six music producers with different backgrounds in genre, receive a selected packet of samples four weeks before the slam evening. Within that time they have to produce four tracks with each track being not longer than three minutes. For the production of the tracks they can only use the given samples. No external instruments are allowed. Effects and tools for music production can be used. All genres are allowed.

At the actual SampleSlam event the producers then meet and battle each other in front of a jury and the crowd. The slammers can now use “organic” instruments such as guitar, beatbox or live vocals to supplement their sets. The jury and partially the audience then decide which slammer makes the way to the finals and becomes the winner. At the battle Techno meets HipHop meets House meets Downbeat. The first three winners receive a price. However, all the slammers gain from a strong and active network of producers from beginners to professional label owners, who use the SampleSlam to find new skilled individuals.

The project SampleSlam is part of the non-profit society “SampleSlam Musikerförderung e.V.”

2017

Digital Vinyl Edition

In cooperation with SERATO and Battle Avenue we have released for SMF 2017 a special SampleMusicFestival Serato DVS record.  This record includes a download card with beats by several artists including DJ Excess, D-Strukt, Cut&Paste records and more.

Open Call for 2018

Interested artists and developers from various disciplines are encouraged to submit music project ideas to become a participant at SampleMusicFestival. Selected participants who have proposed a project idea will be named official in the program schedule and will get a free festival + accommodations for two nights.

Finger Drumming Battle

The first finger drumming competition was a bis success. We had participants from France, Italy, UK, Poland, Russia and Germany making the crowd go crazy. The winner of 2017 was Guvibosch and we are looking forward to seeing him defend the title in 2018.

Skratch Competiton

With 20 scratch DJs entering, the level of skills in the 2017 competition was one of the highest ever. Symatic brought the title back to the UK and Chmilex from Poland came in a worthy second place. Thanks to all participants, Battle Ave and the judges who did a great job.

One of our aims is to progress constantly the concept of the event. For instance, we would like to involve more electronic music artists to expand the program schedule and attract more people from other music genres to visit the venue.  Another idea is to host a controllerism competition and install jam sessions for all kinds of musicians. The festival's focus, therefore, is making contacts. A meeting of modern music and venue for linking different aspects of sample culture.
