Yamaha fgdp competition
After several editions of the Finger Drumming World Championship, we saw the need to introduce a more rhythm-focused format. The Yamaha FGDP is the perfect instrument for this evolution — a controller designed to showcase pure rhythmic skill on the pads, without the use of loops.
Hence, we’re stoked to present in collaboration with Yamaha the very first edition of this new format, taking place right before the Finger Drumming World Championship at Sample Music Festival 2025 in Berlin.
Schedule
The competition will take place at 7 PM on the main stage of the House of Music. Each competitor will perform a 2-minute solo to showcase their skills. After all performances, a winner will be determined. In the event of a tie, a 1-minute tiebreaker round will be required.
Rules
Perform a routine in the genre of your choice, using only the sounds of the FGDP. The focus is entirely on your pad performance — no loops, just pure rhythm and creativity.
Hardware
All participants will perform using a Yamaha FGDP, which will be provided by SMF. Practice units will be available at the House of Music on Friday and Saturday afternoon, giving everyone the chance to warm up and get familiar with the controller ahead of the competition.
Criteria
The jury will consider the following criteria in making their decision: musicality, performance technique, rhythmical skills, timing, and creativity.
